ICRISAT Honors the Life and Legacy of a Distinguished Scientist, Mentor, and Advocate for Agricultural Innovation in Semi-Arid Regions

It is with profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of Dr Ramadjita Tabo on 13 January 2025.

Dr Tabo was a renowned agronomist and researcher who dedicated his life to advancing sustainable agricultural practices and ensuring food security in semi-arid regions.

Dr Tabo earned his PhD in Agronomy and Plant Genetics from the University of Arizona, USA, in 1985, marking the start of a distinguished career defined by impactful roles and contributions to agricultural science.

For over eight years, he served as the Regional Director and Country Representative for Mali at the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT). Since joining ICRISAT in 1986, he also worked as Assistant Director across multiple locations, including Hyderabad/Patancheru, India; Kano, Nigeria; Bamako, Mali; and Niamey, Niger. Beyond ICRISAT, Dr Tabo served as the Deputy Executive Director of the Forum for Agricultural Research in Africa (FARA).

A dedicated researcher, Dr Tabo's work included evaluating and promoting fertilizer micro-dosing technology, warrantage systems, and integrated crop-livestock intensification—innovations that transformed livelihoods in vulnerable regions. He was a prolific author, with over 140 scientific publications, articles, and books to his name.

Dr Tabo’s expertise and contributions were recognized globally, including his membership in the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Dr Tabo’s legacy extends beyond his professional achievements; he was deeply admired for his dedication, humility, and commitment to making a difference. His contributions to ICRISAT and the scientific community will always be remembered with great respect and gratitude.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Dr Tabo’s family and loved ones during this difficult time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them as they navigate this profound loss.

On behalf of the Institute, we honor Dr Ramadjita Tabo’s extraordinary life and contributions. May his soul rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength in the enduring impact of his remarkable legacy.
